Okay formal fallacies are all A are B
all C are B
therefore all A are C
But informal fallacies dont fit that do i have that right? Informal fallacies are a but confusing..
Informal fallacies are more noticeable. They are usually able to be detected simply by reading the argument and understanding that it does not make sense. The example in the book was pretty helpful to me. I will put it here for you to see if it helps at all.
ReplyDeleteThe Brooklyn Bridge is made up of atoms.
Atoms are invisible.
Therefore, the Brooklyn Bridge is invisible.
You have to have some sort of knowledge about a bridge to know that they are in fact visible, but as long as you know that it is pretty obvious that the Brooklyn Bridge is not invisible. I hope this is helpful to you.
Thanks sam. I would have needed to really think this over for some time, but the brooklyn bridge thing reminded me of what was said in class. So I can now see what your talking about. There is really a lot to remember for all of these descriptions. No one could challenge that fact.
ReplyDeleteThanks Samm that was very helpful. So if i have it straight informal fallaciesin an argument that doesnt make scence like that example that we talked about in class about the vodka and the famous guy just because he is famous at one thing does not make him an expert in vodka. Thanks again the way you explained def helped for me to get it straight.
ReplyDeleteFormal fallacies (of which you give one example) are mistaken because of their form alone. In informal fallacies the error has something to do with the content. All formal fallacies occur in deductive arguments, but informal fallacies can occur in both deductive and inductive arguments.
